Go eat worms. Canadian worms, as a matter of fact

-Posted by Ryan Doyle, ArtsQuest intern and New York Rangers fan.

Two years ago my sister and I went to Musikfest and we found our way to a comedic musical comedy trio known as The Arrogant Worms.  I still remember what a perfect summer night it was to sit back, relax and enjoy their north-of-the-border brand of acoustic-comedy (they’re from Canada).

The Arrogant Worms are easy to love.  Their comedy is non-stop and their songs are guaranteed to make you giggle.

Equally as funny as their music is their banter and improv between the songs. The banter reminds me of listening to a live album by the Barenaked Ladies.  It’s probably no coincidence that both BNL & The Arrogant Worms proudly hail from the great white north.

In fact, to say “The Arrogant Worms” proudly hail from Canada is an understatement.  A majority of their songs poke fun at Canadian culture, including “The Last Saskatchewan Pirate,” “Me Like Hockey,” and “We Are the Beaver.”

The Worms have been at it since 1991 and have a plethora of songs to draw from (including “Big Fat Road Manager,” “Me Like Hockey,” & “Celine Dion”).  But, my favorite song of all, is “Jesus’ Brother Bob,” a song about Jesus’ forgotten brother, Bob which features lyrics like, “I have to pay the ferry to cross the Galilee.  But my brother, no not him, he walks across for free.”

I once read a review that said the Worms’ shows can provide escapism for the audience.  I would have to agree with that, but, in all honesty, who would want to escape Bethlehem (and Musikfest)?  Especially when The Arrogant Worms are involved.

You should definitely check them out on August 13 at The Morning Call Plaza Tropical & on August 12 at Liederplatz.
